Appeal of Conscience Foundation Awards Dinner More than 500 leaders of the business, political, religious and diplomatic communities gathered to honor The Lord Browne of Madingley, Group Chief Executive of BP, p.l.c., and The Honorable Richard C. Holbrooke, Former Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations (1999 - 2001) at the Appeal of Conscience Foundation Awards Dinner at the Pierre Hotel (New York City) on Tuesday, March 27, 2007.
,br>Lord Browne was recognized with the Appeal of Conscience Award for advancing tolerance and inclusion, fostering international cooperation and promoting environmental awareness and cultural diversity.

Ambassador Holbrooke, Former Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations (1999 - 2001), was awarded the Appeal of Conscience Public Service Award for his leadership in national and international affairs and for his diplomatic acumen as chief architect of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement which ended the war in Bosnia.

Rabbi Arthur Schneier, Founder and President of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, set the tone for the evening, “Hear the cry of the oppressed” (Psalm 102), recalling that the impetus for the formation of the Foundation was the oppression of religious beliefs within the Soviet Union.

John Negroponte, United States Deputy Secretary of State, continued that theme, addressing the critical need to do more to stop the AIDS/HIV pandemic in Africa, offering hope in the administration's plan to quadruple United States funding to fight the disease.

Paul Wolfowitz, President of the World Bank Group, who had just returned from a trip to Africa, spoke of the urgent need to halt the genocide in Darfur. He hailed the nations of Rwanda, Ghana, and Congo for their own dramatic post-conflict economic growth, a sign of better things to come for that continent.

The dinner was co-emceed by television's Charlie Rose and Katie Couric.
