Appeal of Conscience Foundation Announces President of Mexico Enrique Peňa Nieto to Receive  World Statesman Award The Appeal of Conscience Foundation, an interfaith organization, and its president and founder Rabbi Arthur Schneier, today announced it would honor the President of Mexico, Enrique Peňa Nieto, with the 2014 World Statesman Award for his leadership of Mexico for making hard choices that seek to propel his nation and his people forward.

The dinner will be held in New York on September 23, 2014, Waldorf=Astoria.

The World Statesman Award honors leaders who support peace, prosperity and freedom by promoting tolerance, human dignity and human rights by championing these causes in their homeland and working with other world leaders to build a better future for all.

"President Peňa Nieto will be recognized for his vigorous leadership, new vision and as a stakeholder in global responsibility committed to economic and social development, peace, international and inter-cultural cooperation anchored in human rights, freedom, and tolerance,” saidRabbi Arthur Schneier, President of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation.

"I am honored by this important recognition from the Appeal of Conscience Foundation and Rabbi Schneier," said President Peña Nieto. Freedom, peace, prosperity, tolerance and human dignity are values that I personally share, and that my government fully supports and works for. Throughout the years, the ACF has held high to the world individuals who stand for achievement and equality, and I am humbled to be in such revered company."

Past recipients of the World Statesman Award include: Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (2013), Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper (2012), South Korean President Lee Myung-bak (2011), Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Dr.Manmohan Singh (2010), British Prime Minister Gordon Brown (2009), French President Nicolas Sarkozy (2008), Chancellor Angela Merkel (2007) and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2006). Other recipients include former Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher,Romano Prodi, John Howard and King Juan Carlos I., President Mikhail Gorbachev and President Václav Havel.


President Enrique Peña Nieto

The Constitutional President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, was born on 20 July 1966.

He holds a BA in Law from the Universidad Panamericana and a MA in Business Administration from the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM).

Enrique Peña Nieto joined public service at an early age, occupying several positions in the government of the State of Mexico. From 2000 to 2002, he was Secretary of Administration and from 2003 to 2004, he was elected Representative of the 13th District in the 65th Session of the State of Mexico, where he was Coordinator of the Parliamentary Group of the Institutional Revolutionary Party.

In 2005, Enrique Peña Nieto ran for the governorship of the State of Mexico. During his campaign, he toured the state, listening to people and signing commitments before a notary, ranging from remodeling clinics and schools to building roads and hospitals.
After a successful campaign, he was elected governor of the State of Mexico, during the period from 16 September 2005 to 15 September 2011.

During his term as governor, Enrique Peña Nieto achieved significant progress in infrastructure and public services, particularly in health. He restructured finances in the State of Mexico, reducing public debt and increasing expenditure targeting works and programs, without the need to increase taxes.

In 2011, at the end of his term as governor, Enrique Peña Nieto expressed his hopes of running for the presidency. After an intense electoral campaign, characterized by the signing of national and state commitments, he won the elections on 1 July 2012.

As of 1 December, Enrique Peña Nieto is President of Mexico. The main objective of his government will ensure that the rights that the Constitution confers on Mexicans move from paper into practice.
