ACF Joins Welcome of Pope Benedict XVI to Israel Rabbi Arthur Schneier, ACF President and Founder and Senior Rabbi of Park East Synagogue, visits Israel to join in welcoming ceremonies and various events slated for Pope Benedict XVI on his historic visit to Israel. During his five-day trip, Rabbi Schneier was reunited with the Pope at the Western Wall.

“This trip is an historic milestone of Benedict XVI Papacy and in the evolving relationship between the Catholic Church and the Jewish people. It will reinforce the significant accomplishments achieved since Nostra Aetate,” said Rabbi Arthur Schneier. “Pope Benedict XVI´s journey to Israel is a reaffirmation of his commitment to strengthen ties with the Jewish people and broaden diplomatic relations, first established in 1992, between the State of Israel and the Holy See.”

“As a Holocaust survivor I believe that because of his own life experience, Pope Benedict XVI has a better understanding of the trials and tribulations that the Jewish people faced throughout history, particularly during the Holocaust. His consistent condemnation of anti- Semitism has given voice to those who take a stand against the recent surge in anti-Semitism currently manifesting in Europe.”

History was made on April 18, 2008 when Rabbi Arthur Schneier hosted Pope Benedict XVI at Park East Synagogue, marking the first time that a Pope had ever visited a synagogue in the United States.
